CityConnect’s Bike Friendly Business scheme – 25% increase in cycling
Bike Friendly Businesses across the region have seen a 25% increase in cycling, thanks to a pioneering scheme being run as part of West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s £60m CityConnect programme aimed at encouraging more people to travel by bike or on foot. The scheme is funded by the Department for Transport’s Cycling and Walking to Work Fund and Cycle City Ambition Grant.
Through CityConnect’s Bike Friendly Business scheme, which has been running since August 2016, employers across West Yorkshire can access free of charge expert advice, and grants of up to £5,000 to encourage more staff to commute by bike. Businesses already doing their bit to welcome staff on bikes can become certified ‘Bike Friendly Businesses’ with bronze, silver and gold accreditation for organisations going the extra mile. Enabling more people to travel by bike is great for a business with staff arriving at work on time and feeling energised, they’ll also be more productive and take fewer sick days, and it may even help with staff retention.
More than 190 organisations across the region have taken part so far, with more than 50 receiving accreditation. Grant funding has been used to install high quality bike parking, as well as provide pool bikes, maintenance equipment and cycle training for staff.
