Lads and dads in special ‘builders’ day
A group of budding builders enjoyed a special insight into the world of work as part of a half-term activity organised by Incommunities.
Thirteen youngsters, aged ten to 14, joined their dads and other relatives this week (24 October) in getting to grips with basic building skills.
The ‘lads and dads’ day, held at Incommunities’ Construction Training Centre, marked the housing group’s annual celebrations of International Men’s Day, next month.
During the taster day, the youngsters – all relatives of Incommunities staff – had a go at plastering, basic plumbing and joinery, all under the supervision of skilled trade professionals.
To round off the event, the lads and dads worked together to put into practice what they had learnt by making wooden toys and figures.
Fourteen-year-old Joe Clancy from Undercliffe (who goes to Immanuel College) came along with his dad Tom, who works as a stonemason with Incommunities. He said: It’s been great fun and really opened my eyes to the different types of building work out there and my dad’s role.
“I now want to look at doing work experience with Incommunities – possibly in IT!”
Iain Hutchinson who works for the housing group’s Building services was joined by his foster nephew, Kyle (10) who attends Thornton Primary School and made a wooden helicopter on the day. Kyle said: “I really love making things at home with my hands. It’s been great to learn new skills and then make something.”
Geraldine Howley, Incommunities’ Group Chief Executive, said: “As an equal opportunities employer we are committed to encouraging our younger generation – both boys and girls – to explore their career options and reach their potential.
“This taster in construction has proved a great way of giving these boys a real hands-on introduction into the world of work. Earlier this year we ran a similar event for daughters of some of our staff.
“Hopefully, today’s event will help these youngsters to grow and start to think about the fabulous opportunities in housing and construction.”
International Men’s Day takes place on 19th November.
