  • TV gardening expert unveils new people’s garden at Bradford Garden Centre

Visitors flocked to Tong Garden Centre last weekend to see Leeds based garden designer and TV presenter Katie Rushworth unveil her inspirational people’s garden.

The ITV Love Your Garden co-presenter officially opened the show garden, that has been brought to life by Katie and Tong’s team of gardening experts, in front of a large crowd.

Among the audience was Lucy Cullimore from Huddersfield who said: “I always watch Katie on ITV’s Love Your Garden, she’s really natural with loads of good ideas to try at home. Her show garden is beautiful, it’s really inspiring and makes me think about the zones I want to create in my garden. I especially love the planted wall, it’s a real focal point and looks great.”

The 5.4 x 4.7m garden features a selection of Yorkshire grown plants, a water feature, specimen planting and areas to relax in, entertain children and encourage wildlife.

Katie Rushworth, who is working with Tong on a year-long series of projects, is delighted with the garden: “I really champion local, independently-owned garden centres and I’m really proud to be working with such a great team at Tong. Everyone is always so helpful and knowledgeable, it’s been a pleasure to work alongside them to bring this garden to life.

“My show garden is about creating something accessible for people to replicate, and so I have included solutions for problems that we all encounter in our gardens, such as an area of shade planted to look good despite the lack of sunshine. I’m always asked about low-maintenance plants that look good all year round, so my mixed border is planted to deliver texture, form and colour throughout the seasons.”

The garden will be refreshed as the seasons change, with touches that Katie knows people can achieve in their own gardens. Visitors to Tong can also pick up ‘how to’ leaflets to help them to recreate Katie’s simple ideas at home.

Throughout the year, Katie will also be on hand to lend her expertise for a series of planting videos and will be sharing the secrets of her success in a two hour gardening masterclass and book signing on Friday, 23rd June. Tickets include free tea and cake on arrival and cost £12, or £20 to include a signed copy of Katie’s book, Plants, beds and borders, and are available from www.tonggardencentre.co.uk.

The seventh series of Love Your Garden, the programme that transforms the gardens of deserving people throughout the UK, starts filming this month.

Tong Garden Centre occupies a 17 acre site in Tong village. It is one of Yorkshire’s biggest garden centres with 110,000 square feet of retail space and parking for up to 1,000 cars
