THEATRE lovers can combine one of Shakespeare’s best loved plays with a stay at Yorkshire’s only five-star hotel this summer.
For the second year running The Grand, York, has teamed up with Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre to create a special experience for culture loving visitors to the historic city.
Inspired by the London Rose Playhouse of 1587, Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre is a pop-up playhouse which will be staging performances at the foot of York’s 13th century Clifford’s Tower between 25 June and 1 September.
The authentically constructed theatre will form the focal piece of a Shakespearian village, where jesters and minstrels will mingle with crowds heading in to see this year’s programme of Hamlet, The Tempest, Henry V or Twelfth Night.
And The Grand’s Premium Rose Theatre Show and Stay package not only guarantees theatre goers the best seats in the house, but also a chauffeur to drive them from the opulent hotel, through the medieval city to the venue.
The package also includes an overnight stay at the opulent hotel, which was originally built as a Palace of Business for one of Edwardian England’s leading railway companies and overlooks the city walls, with views of York Minster.
Those taking advantage of the package will find an array of complimentary gifts in their room and will also be served a five-course tasting menu, created by executive chef Norman McKenzie and his team, in the hotel’s renowned Hudsons restaurant.
Last year more than 80,000 people enjoyed shows at Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre and Philip Bolson, general manager at The Grand, York, said the package enables visitors to get even more out of their trip to the city.
“Our aim was to make a trip to the theatre even more enjoyable by taking the stress out of finding somewhere to eat beforehand, navigating your way to the venue and then making your way home afterwards.
“York is a very special city and The Grand is its finest hotel, so we hope this package will enable visitors to linger a while and enjoy a little more of what we have to offer.”
A simpler, Classic Show and Stay package, is also available, comprising bed, breakfast and the best seats in the house to a chosen play.
The Premium package is priced from £450 per night based on two adults sharing, while the Classic package starts at £242.
