  • College students battle it out to taste success in a restaurant challenge

The heat is on students from Bradford College as they prepare to battle it out in a charity cook-off.

Students from both the hospitality and catering course and the travel and tourism course will put their skills to the test when they take over the running of a professional restaurant and go head to head in the Devil’s Kitchen event.

The event takes place at The Cow on The Hill restaurant in the Holiday Inn in Clifton Village, Brighouse on the evening of Sunday June 9.

Inspired by the popular TV show Hell’s Kitchen, the students have been divided into two teams, red and blue, and will compete for customer satisfaction.

Guests will pick a menu – the red team have opted for Thai food while the blue tem have gone with French cuisine – and will score the food and service and the team with the highest score at the end of the evening will savour the taste of success.

The event will raise money for the Greenfingers charity, which creates gardens in children’s hospices, with guests being asked to make a donation, suggested to be £15, for the three-course menu.

Sarah O’Connell, lecturer at Bradford College, said: “Each team is made up of three chefs and four front of house staff. The teams have had to create their menu, promote the event, decorate the tables and during the evening they will cook and serve their audience showcasing their skills.

“The students are taking complete autonomy over the event. It’s theirs, and giving them ownership gives them a sense of responsibility and achievement.

“These types of events help us ensure our students leave us with invaluable work experience that employers are looking for when recruiting. It enhances their employability.”

Anyone wanting to book a table should email events@hileedsbrighousehotel.co.uk or call 01484 404 500 and select option two. They will be required to state whether they would like to be seated in the red or blue side and which service time they would like – 6.30pm, 7pm or 7.30pm.

Any potential students interested in finding out more about the travel and tourism or catering and hospitality courses at Bradford College are invited to attend the next open event on Saturday July 6, 11am-2pm. They will get the chance to tour the facilities and chat to staff and current students.
