Girls get a taste for construction

Ten budding builders have been given a unique taste of the world of work at a fun training day organised by Incommunities.

The youngsters, aged eight and upwards joined their relatives who work for the housing group at the ‘bring your daughters to work’ event.

During the day they were given a talk about careers in construction and had a go at basic joinery skills under the supervision of the housing group’s construction training staff.

They were then set the challenge of turning what they’d learnt into tables and asked to decorate the tops with assorted tiles.

The half-term event rounded off Incommunities’ 2019 International Women’s Day celebrations.

Ten-year-old Hazel Somerset from Saltaire, was brought along by Group Marketing and Communications Manager and mum, Caroline Chapman and said: “It’s been great fun and I’ve learnt lots about the world of work.

“Incommunities do lots of different things and making and decorating the table was the best.”

Incommunities Group Chief Executive, Geraldine Howley said: “As a group we are always keen to encourage young people – girls and boys – to show ambition and build careers in areas that suit their aspirations and interests best.

“The day’s been great fun, and hopefully it’s given the youngsters a real insight into construction, an area which might not be an obvious career choice for many girls but one which offers exciting options.

“You never know, we could have inspired another future apprentice after today’s event!”
