Kids experience a building skills fun day
Ten young budding builders have been given first-hand experience of the world of work thanks to Incommunities.
The youngsters, aged ten to 15, joined their parents and other relatives this week (23 October) in getting to grips with basic building skills.
The ‘kids and parents’ day, held at Incommunities’ Construction Training Centre, marked the start of the housing group’s annual celebrations of International Men’s Day, next month.
During the ‘half-term’ event, the youngsters – all relatives of Incommunities staff – had a go at basic joinery, painting and sanding, all under the supervision of skilled trade professionals.
To round off the day, they teamed up with their relatives to put into practice what they had learnt by making decorative wooden clocks, big and small.
Ten-year-old Abdullah from Manningham came along with his dad Rashid Hafejee, an apprentice plumber with Incommunities. He said: “I’ve learnt lots about building and also more about what my dad does in his work.
“It’s been great fun making a ‘Big Ben’ clock from wood and painting it.”
Jamie Whitehead, who works for the housing group’s Buildingservices, was joined by son, Harley (10) who attends Sharp Lane Primary School in South Leeds. Harley had a great time making his wooden clock and said: “It’s been a fun way of spending a day of my school holiday!
“Sometimes I help my dad at home and coming into work with him today has given me the chance to learn new skills and then build something exciting.”
Geraldine Howley, Incommunities’ Group Chief Executive, said: “As an equal opportunities employer we are committed to encouraging our younger generation – both boys and girls – to reach their potential.
“This taster day provided the chance for these youngsters to get a real hands-on experience of the world of work. Earlier this year we ran a similar event for daughters of some of our staff.
“The event was a great way to show our support for International Men’s Day and help encourage these young people to start to think about the exciting life choices ahead of them.”
International Men’s Day takes place on 19th November. For more information click http://ukmensday.org.uk/
