McCann begins work on £25m LED street lighting contract for Calderdale Council

Civil and Electrical Engineering firm, McCann, has begun work on a £25m contract to replace and maintain street lighting across Calderdale, Yorkshire, which will see the Nottingham-based company working in the area until at least the year 2025.

The McCann team will be responsible for replacing around 19,000 LED lanterns and 9,000 lighting columns, and will carry out all the lighting and electrical design, associated ICP (Independent Connections Provider) connections and civil engineering works in the area.  In addition, McCann has also been contracted for the maintenance of both the existing and future asset portfolio, including fault repairs, cleaning of assets and emergency services for the street lighting infrastructure.

Calderdale is just the latest contract-win during what has been a successful 2017 for McCann – a year in which the team are celebrating their 50th year in business – and the company is gaining an enviable reputation in the industry for its LED street lighting excellence in particular.

“As a company, we pride ourselves on delivering a comprehensive range of civil and electrical engineering services and infrastructure solutions, but it’s been our LED street lighting expertise that has seen us win significant contracts this year,” says McCann Local Authority Business Director, Tiz Gibson.

Indeed, McCann started 2017 with a similar contract-win for London’s second largest borough, Hillingdon, with the team commissioned to upgrade approximately 23,000 lanterns to LED and maintain 25,000 assets over a 5-year period.

The project was awarded to McCann following a detailed evaluation by the Council who highlighted a comprehensive control management system (CMS), good industry practice and the company’s aspiration for long-term partnership working. McCann will enable the authority to see a huge reduction in both energy and maintenance costs – making a positive contribution towards the current carbon footprint and value-for-money for the taxpayer.

“We were hugely impressed by McCann’s tender and evidence of successful similar projects they’ve undertaken for other Local Authorities across the UK,” says Bona Matturi, Calderdale’s Corporate Lead-Design and Asset Management (Highways & Transportation). “This will have a very positive impact on the people and businesses of Calderdale – from an economic as well as environmental point of view –  and we are confident the McCann team will ensure the project will run smoothly from start to finish.”

Tiz Gibson adds, “We have made significant investments to ensure this project will be another success to add to our extensive portfolio. We have TUPE transferred several existing members of staff and we have employed local staff including several apprentices. We have also sourced and will use suppliers from the area which will contribute to the local economy. This is a fantastic piece of work and we look forward to building a strong partnership with Calderdale and the neighbouring authorities over the next eight years.”
